Depressing it

“Depressing” — on the way to work yesterday, I overheard a young woman instructing her quite old father how to open the hatchback of the car — “you have to depress it see” (interesting word choice, I thought.) “You have to what?” said the dad. “–To depress it.” I thought for sure the second time, when she was reiterating, she would say “press it down,” instead of “depress”, but “depress”, it turned out, was the word she wanted.
