An ‘e’ in the water

Learned something from my dad tonight, a native French speaker: that an o and e together in French (“œ“) is called and e dans l’eau — an e in the water.

Wikipedia says that in French this is actually an e dans l’o , an “e in the o”, of which e dans l’eau is only a pun.

We came upon this trying to get at the spelling of decœurant.
