Chapters 9 and 13 (criterion collection edition) begin very similarly: [9] starts with the father at Masa’s and with Noriko doing chores around the house, followed by a shot of the father in the lane returning home; [13] begins with Noriko at Masa’s and with her father doing similar household chores in the same locations around the house, followed by a lane shot of Noriko returning home. So there’s a striking parallelism to be observed between these scenes. In any case, what follows is a list of all of the “lane shots” in the film, the shots of Shukichi or Noriko returning home down the lane.
